About Hampton Roads Perinatal Center (HRPC)

Our Mission

 At Hampton Roads Perinatal Center, our mission is to improve maternal and infant health outcomes by providing comprehensive, compassionate, and equitable care to mothers and their families. 

Our Vision

 We envision a community where maternal and infant health disparities are eliminated,  families feel empowered and supported throughout their perinatal and postnatal journey.

 Low-Income Families: Only about 15-20% of low-income families access formal childbirth education classes due to cost, transportation, or scheduling barriers.


Rural Populations: In rural areas, access may drop to around 10-15% due to limited local resources.

 Overall Infant Mortality Rate: ~5-8 deaths per 1,000 live births


Black Infant Mortality Rate: ~2 times higher than the general population; around 10-12 deaths per 1,000 live births

Overall Maternal Mortality: 20-25 deaths per 100,000 live births

Disparities in Access to Mental Health Services

 Low-Income and Minority Populations: Only about 20-25% of low-income or minority mothers experiencing mental health conditions receive adequate support, often due to barriers like cost, stigma, and lack of providers.

Rural Areas: In rural regions, access to specialized perinatal mental health providers may be limited, with only ~10-15% of affected mothers receiving proper care.
